The Volcanic island in the Caribbean Sea, southeast of Puerto Rico, contains seven active volcanoes and has been inhabited by Arawaks and Carib people. When Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493, he claimed it for Spain. In 1632 the island fell under British control.
